I really know that summer is winding down when we hit the birthdays. We have no fewer than five September babies in our family. One of those babies is Mr B who turned a ripe old age this year and was deserving of my first real attempt at a birthday cake.
And so, for Day 2 of Older Mum’s seasonal meme #OneWeek, I will be chatting about cake, because summer 2012 was the summer of love… of cake.
It’s as if all my cake making exploits of this year had been building to this point. There have been numerous banana cakes, oodles of chocolate brownies, three banoffee pies, a couple of lemon drizzle cakes, a cherry cake and a fair few chocolate chip cookies.
By mid-summer, with a few birthday parties under her belt, Bibsey was wise to the fact that cakes candles go together. A bit like fish fingers and dip-it (that’s ketchup). She flat-out refused to eat any of one of my lemon drizzle cakes because there were no candles. There were tears and tantrums on a grand scale over that particular confectionery debacle.
So when it came to Daddy’s birthday cake (chocolate with chocolate buttercream icing) she was all over the candles like, erm, like a kid in a cake shop. Here she is gazing long and lovingly at the cake. Her words at this moment were “I am so happy”. I suspect that I am going to have to pull something rather special out of the cake bag for her third birthday…
